This month, in my position, the ASB team has worked to plan club rush, and prepare for Homecoming. In my position, I have met with Mrs. Gilbertson and Dr. Robison twice in preparation for being sworn in on September 13th.
My standing committee is Link Crew. So far we have helped the incoming freshmen around campus. We have also helped parents find their classes at back to school night.
My special committee was Club Rush and the BTSD. For club rush, I sold My Intent bracelets and helped set up and publicize. In addition, I worked with the rest of the ASB team on preparation for the initial date for the back to school dance, sold tickets, and then met to adapt the plan for the postponed date.
My mentor is Ximena. We have worked together in the classroom, and I have advised her regarding classroom expectations and responsibilities, especially regarding formal dress for ASB meetings and components of the digital portfolio. We have also spent some bonding time together by getting lunch, and I have got to know her much better .
One concern I would like to address is our members not dressing up enough. We have a responsibility to set the standard for the student body, and go the extra mile. I was disappointed that for culture day, it was only me, april, bryan, and naomi.
One positive comment I have is for Payton Miller-Kay. She always comes into class with a good attitude and with spirit.
One change I would like to see is a more unified class rather than going off into our little groups. With covid and seating charts it is hard, but I think we can make more of an effort.
My impact this year has been going the extra mile to be friends with underclassmen. I have started making an effort to give rides to people. Even though it is inconvenient, I feel like it helps out so much because I remember hating having to walk home after a long day of school and practice in the heat.
September/October
Lydia Waters ASB Board Member September/October Meeting
This month, in my position, I reached out to contacts at elementary schools, wrote my presentation, and gave it at a board meeting. I also assisted with ASB during homecoming, supporting all the grade levels.
My standing committee is renaissance and link crew, in which I assisted in passing out Renaissance this quarter.
My special committee is Homecoming. I helped the senior class presidency with float painting and decorating, decorating for the night rally and window, and the PVC pipe poster. I also participated in the night rally dance.
My mentor partner is Ximena. We continue to develop a relationship by going to lunch and helping each other out during class. I was particularly able to help out her in the other freshman Representatives with Homecoming purchase orders and with the Halloween dance preparations.
One concern I would like to address is not everybody being spirited. Even during homecoming I saw some members of our class not even putting in the effort to wear the color.
One positive comment I have is for Abby Thompson. She is always going above and beyond for a class, she does so much for Spirit commissioners and spirit counts and she fills in the gaps for those who don't do what they need to.
One change I would like to see is people being more respectful towards Naomi and not talking over her.
My impact this past month is always being there for whoever needs it, whether it's in the program or outside, at lunch or in passing, in or out of school.
November/December
Lydia Waters 12/9/21 November/December ASB Board Member
The past 2 months, in my position, I have attended and presented at board meetings. I have reached out to students at the different elementary schools and at harvest high. I also attended adjunct meetings with the other ASB officers. I feel I have been effective in my position the past 2 months.
My standing committee is Link Crew. We have not done much in the past months, but we are gearing up to have our first Link Crew Study Buddy night adapted for Covid.
My special committees the past 2 months have been door decorating and snowflakes. I was a group leader for door decorations, and I worked with Ximena, Abby H, and Emily. We were very efficient and able to make our doors look good with plenty of time to help other groups. I also was on the standing committee for snowflakes and did a PE class.
My mentor partner is Ximena. We are developing a super amazing bond, and I was also able to work with her for door decorating. I enjoy being there for her and helping her with coursework and portfolio. She’s basically my little sister now.
One concern I have is wasting class time when one person is working and everyone else is messing around. I think this can be improved by being more open to delegation of tasks and people being willing to take on work, like we did with the snowflakes.
One positive comment I have is for Kylee Brown. She is truly doing everything at once while being under so much pressure. She did an incredible job with formal, warm and fuzzy week, and door decorating, and she deserves all the praise in the world for that.
My change that I would like to see again is people being more respectful to Naomi and being understanding of the stress she is under. Naomi is doing a great job of leading our class but it is frustrating when people talk over her or expect her to be positive all the time when that isn’t realistic.
My impact on the school and on the world is focusing on character growth and having open discussions and communications. The past few months I have focused on trying to be kinder to the people around me and managing my anger and personal frustration to make sure it isn’t taken out on the people around me.
January/Feburary 2022
Lydia Waters ASB Board Member Formal Meeting January 2/10/2022
In my position this month, I have created my presentation and given it at a board meeting. I have also participated in an adjunct meeting with all of the elementary schools and with the other ASB officer teams
My standing committee is Link Crew. Coming up soon we have 8th grade day, so I have volunteered to be a senior helper for that as link crew transitions in the new class that I will not be here to see.
My special committee was working with the senior class on Winterfest. Although there were some bumps in the road, I feel it was very successful and our class ended up winning. We worked at Emma’s house and I helped with the more artistic side of things in making our mathletes vs athletes poster.
My mentorship with Ximena has been great. I always make sure that her and the other freshman have everything explained regarding curriculum. Ximena also always checks in with me to see how I’m doing and I can tell she’s grown so much since July.
My concern is that tensions are rising regarding link crew and elections, and as a senior I am not a part of it, but it also makes the classroom less of a safe place for everyone.
One change I would like to see is spending more time celebrating our wins and everything we have done instead of constantly moving on to the next thing, and doing more positive debriefs.
My impact is being a positive influence for the freshman on my Track team, leading stretches, and just being someone anyone can talk to in leadership and in track.
February/ March 2022
Lydia Waters ASB Board Member Formal Meeting February/March 4/13/2022
In my position the past 2 months, I have created my presentation and given it at a board meeting. I have also participated in adjunct meetings with all of the elementary schools and with the other ASB officer teams. We as an ASB officer team have also met to discuss the banquet.
My standing committee is Link Crew. In march, I participated in link crew 8th grade welcome day. Although I did not have a group because I am graduating, some of the seniors and I worked to help put on lunch and served all of the 8th graders. .
My special committee was Gallery of the Arts. This was a huge undertaking for the entire class and I think it went really well. We worked during class and after school to set up the triangles and put up the art with the help of Mr. Bowers.
My mentorship with Ximena has been great. I do a daily check in with her during class and with the other freshmen and we spend a little time talking about our day, which makes all the difference.
My concern is that people in the class are “checking out”, especially with those who are not returning next year for whatever reason. Even though we have elections early, leadership is a yearlong commitment, not an August to February commitment.
One change I would like to see is being focused on the now instead of constantly stressing out about the next step. This mindset keeps us from enjoying the events we put on if we are always looking at the next step.
My impact is always being there as a person to talk to, for advice or a rant, or a shoulder to cry on. I am trying to be more open and kinder to people instead of just making a b- face at them.
ASB Report- the final months
Lydia Waters ASB Board Member April-May meeting 5/12/2022
This month, in my position, I have met with the superintendent, prepared my presentation, and attended my final school board meeting. In addition, I made sure all of the leadership students were informed on their assignment for the board meeting they signed up for and made sure they had the details they needed. This month was not very busy, the board just focused on things like the nutrition report which showed the students that utilized the free lunch at school which has gone up dramatically since last year, and continued onto the next step of construction of the new CTE building. We also gave recognition to retiring staff members and 10, 25, and 30 year employees. I also helped plan the banquet and presented awards there.
My standing committee is Renaissance and Link Crew, which has been handed over to next year’s team. Unfortunately I was not able to attend link crew study buddy nights because of work, so that concluded this year’s Link Crew activities.
My special committee was the challenge, which was a huge undertaking. I was in charge of the staff appreciation day. I put in a purchase order for the succulents for the staff gift, picked them up with the seniors and Morty, delivered them to staff boxes, and decorated the food service office. I also did a how-to form for the procedure form for the challenge. My mentorship has been effective with Ximena. We continue to do our daily check-ins, however we both have been super busy and haven’t spent much time with each other. During this time I’ve made sure to remind her to spend time to destress and take a mental break from it all a little bit every day.
My concern is people being constantly worried about the amount of work other people are putting in and getting angry. I understand that it is frustrating that other people are not doing their jobs fully at times, especially with the challenge, however not every person can micromanage every other person. At the end of the day the only thing you can do is focus on yourself and the amount of work that you put in. Leadership is not about controlling what others do, but setting an example for what needs to be done.
One positive comment I have is for Naomi, for getting everything done during this incredibly stressful time. One change I would like to see is people in our class being genuine and not just being nice for the sake of being nice. I feel like this year there has been less deep connection and most of the time we just say things or give compliments at surface level.
My impact this year has been that I say what needs to be said, stand up for the people around me, and stand up for myself. I hope that I inspire others to always be their own biggest supporter and self advocate, as well as to stand up for what is important.
